Global Switch appoints Managing Director to lead expansion into Hong Kong

Global Switch, the leading owner and operator of wholesale carrier neutral data centre space in Europe and Asia-Pacific, has announced its first senior appointment in Hong Kong to commence activities in the local market in support of the development of its new data centre. The announcement is in line with Global Switch's strategy of expanding in key regional IT and connectivity hubs and responding to strong customer demand in the Asia-Pacific region.

Kelvin Fong has been appointed as Managing Director, Hong Kong with effect from 1 April 2013. Kelvin has a highly successful track record of building and managing data centre operations across the Asia-Pacific region.  Most recently he was the Regional Critical Facilities Management Head APAC for Citigroup where his primary responsibility was the management of their data centre portfolio across the region.  Prior to this he was responsible, as Executive Director for Asia Tone, for overseeing the design, construction and operation of a new 15,000 sq m data centre in Hong Kong.  Kelvin led the project and built local sales and operations team that secured and supported a customer base of local and multi-national organisations.

As announced last year, Global Switch is to build the largest data centre in Hong Kong on a site it has acquired on the Tseung Kwan O (TKO) Industrial Estate. Kelvin's initial focus will be to work with existing Global Switch customers who have already expressed interest in Hong Kong together with new local and international customers to secure commitments for the new  Tier III+* 35,000 sq m gross data centre.  Kelvin will also work closely with the Global Switch design and development team and create an operational team as the project progresses with the first phase forecast to launch in 2015.

John Corcoran, Global Switch's Executive Chairman, commented: "Kelvin brings to the group extensive knowledge of launching major critical environments projects, building and developing teams, and targeting new business.  These skills are all crucial in a development on the scale we are planning in Hong Kong. Kelvin is hugely experienced within the Hong Kong market, but also has valuable international experience and will add to the strength of our senior management team."

Kelvin Fong said: "Although the Hong Kong data centre market has seen rapid transformation over the past couple of years, there is a need for world class purpose built data centres to further drive the digital economy.  Global Switch will not only bring a high quality infrastructure option to Hong Kong, but will also bring unrivalled operational management, reinforcing the city's position as the leading IT hub in the region.  Once the data centre is launched we will be providing a comprehensive range of network and managed services to meet our customers' specific needs, as well as developing a wider customer base.  I am looking forward to working at Global Switch and to the successful launch of the new data centre."

Kelvin has a Master's Degree in Science from the University of Bath (United Kingdom), a Bachelor Degree in Electrical & Electronics from Nanyang Technological University (Singapore) and is a member of the Institution of Engineering Technology, United Kingdom.
