Global Switch, the largest Multi-Tenant Carrier Neutral Data Centre Provider in The Netherlands pre-lets Phase 1 of a planned expansion

January 30, 2013

Global Switch, the leading owner and operator of wholesale carrier neutral data centre space in Europe and Asia-Pacific, is to expand its existing data centre in Amsterdam, which is already the largest carrier neutral multi-tenant data centre in the Netherlands.

The extension will be delivered in phases, typically between 2MW to 4MW of IT power, supported by a common infrastructure which will facilitate highly flexible, scalable and rapid deployment to accommodate customer's bespoke requirements.

Phase 1 of the planned 25,400 sq m gross space extension has been pre-let to a leading international telecommunication services provider.  The construction of this initial Phase is due to start in the next few weeks, becoming operational in Q1 2014.  The design incorporates an average power density of 1,500 watts per sq m with flexibility to deliver much higher densities as required.

Once all the planned Phases of the €240 million extension have been completed, the Global Switch data centre in Amsterdam will provide 64,000 sq m of space and have 100 MW of onsite power generation from two diverse 50kV high voltage feeders directly from the national grid. The extended data centre has a target PUE of 1.25.

The extension will benefit from the network dense environment that the existing data centre campus already provides with a multitude of international and local carriers.  The campus also benefits from the existing connection to the Amsterdam Internet Exchange (AMS-IX), one of the largest internet exchanges in the world.  AMS-IX is situated in Global Switch's data centre guaranteeing excellent reliability and high speed connections inside the Netherlands and around the globe.

Global Switch is committed to reducing the impact of its data centres on the environment as well as combating rising energy costs and has been purchasing 100% green power since 2008.  In this regard Global Switch Amsterdam has achieved ISO 14001 (Environmental Management) and the new extension will be covered by this.  The campus is also accredited to ISO 9001 (Quality Management), ISO 27001 (Information Security Management) and ISAE 3402 (Assurance Reports on Controls at Service Organisations) and will achieve ISO 18001 (Occupational Health & Safety Management) later this year.

Once completed the extension will benefit from a range of energy saving initiatives from free air cooling to reconfigurable power and cooling.  The Amsterdam extension will target a BREEAM Very Good Rating.  These energy saving initiatives coupled with the scale of the data centre, will deliver larger on-going benefits to customers compared to smaller scale data centres.

John Corcoran, Global Switch's Executive Chairman commented: "The expansion of our Amsterdam data centre is a direct response to our customers' needs for additional highly resilient technical space and power.  Amsterdam is an appealing location for many of our customers, with the Netherlands being considered the gateway into Europe due to its central location and accessibility. Owning the ground lease of our Amsterdam data centre and the site around it, gives us complete flexibility to grow as our customers expand, and we are able to work closely with them to deliver bespoke cost effective solutions."

Johan Groeneweg, Global Switch's Managing Director in Amsterdam said "Global Switch is the largest wholesale carrier neutral data centre provider in the Netherlands.  Our scale, highly resilient environment and rich connectivity is highly attractive to customers and we are delighted that Phase 1 of our extension has already been pre-let."
