Matthew joined Global Switch in 2014 as Regional Engineering Director for Europe and was promoted to Chief Design Officer in 2020.

Career

Matthew started out as a design engineer in 1990 and practiced as an electrical design engineer in leading engineering consultancy practices where he designed public as well as mission-critical facilities. Before joining Global Switch Matthew worked for Cundall, an award winning international multi-disciplinary consultancy, where he was a Director in the Critical Systems Group. Matthew participated in the design of many projects including large-scale Data Centres with extensive electrical multi mega-watt infrastructures, deploying various forms of UPS including Static, Diesel Rotary UPS and Hybrid Rotary UPS.

Since joining Global Switch Matthew has been extensively involved in the design of new developments and master planned the redevelopment programme to power densify existing facilities and reduce Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE).

Matthew holds a Master’s degree in Intelligent Buildings from Reading University and a Bachelor’s degree in Building Services Engineering Design & Management. He is also a Chartered Member of CIBSE and an accredited Uptime Tier Designer.

Responsibilities at Global Switch

Matthew leads the Design team, working closely with the Delivery team to deliver projects across the portfolio, including hyperscale deployment.

His team focuses on the design aspects of developments and redevelopments ensuring the highest levels of energy efficiency and resiliency of our Data Centres. Matthew works closely with global customers to provide tailored solutions accommodating requirements for Open Compute Project (OCP) where needed. He is responsible for the continuous improvement and further development of the suite of in-house engineering standards.

As Chief Design Officer, Matthew sits on the Executive Committee, which is assembled to review the business strategy, monitoring performance and overseeing the annual business plans.
